Support
Most questions are answered below. For anything else, or for a bug, there is a form at the end; it reaches a person.
Requirements
- An Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later). Intel Macs are not supported.
- macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
- A mouse or trackpad and a keyboard. Gamepads are not supported yet.
- No account or internet connection for ordinary play, including built-in dialogue. Optional AI-written dialogue and spoken voices each need a Quoxen account and a connection.
Starting a town
New game starts with a choice of 25–300 Sonderfolk, in steps of 25. Continue opens World settings: town width and length, counts of homes, offices, factories, shops, parks and civic buildings, street density, and a food economy switch for local food production and deliveries. The suggested settings fit your chosen population; you can keep them or adjust them before starting.
Select a number to type a value, or use its minus and plus buttons. Reset to defaults restores the suggestions. If the requested buildings do not fit, reduce their counts or increase the town's dimensions. These settings shape a new town; they do not rebuild one already in progress.
Getting around
Left-click inspects a person, building, vehicle or animal. Right-drag rotates and tilts the camera; the mouse wheel or a pinch zooms toward the cursor; left-drag or a two-finger scroll pans. The full list is in the game under Settings → Controls (H).
| Pan / rotate the camera | WASD / QE |
|---|---|
| Zoom: city / district / street / detail | 1 2 3 4 |
| Pause, speed up, slow down | Space, =, - |
| Journal | J |
| Find a place or a person | Shift + P |
| Quick save / quick load | F5 / F9 |
| Sound / graphics settings | F6 / F7 |
On a Mac keyboard the function keys may need Fn held, or the "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" setting in System Settings → Keyboard.
Saving
Save game in the pause menu writes a named snapshot; Quick save
(F5) keeps one quick slot that Quick load (F9)
restores. Named saves live in
~/Library/Application Support/Quoxen/saves; in the Mac
app, quoxen-quicksave.json sits in the Quoxen folder
beside saves. During development, a change to the save
format makes saves incompatible in either direction. Open an older
save with the version that created it, or start a new town in the
updated game. A rejected load leaves your save file and current town
unchanged.
When something looks wrong
The town is slow or stutters
Open graphics settings (F7) and pick a lower preset. Low reduces lighting effects and shadow detail. A smaller starting population can also help; choose it on the New game page.
"The town stopped updating"
The simulation runs separately from the interface. If it stops, the picture stays and the panels keep working. Save if you can, then quit and relaunch; the last quick save or named save is where you left it. If it happens twice, please tell us what you were doing.
No sound, or the wrong sound
Sound settings are on F6. Ambience follows where the camera is, so a quiet corner of the town is quiet on purpose. Spoken voices need the speech feature turned on, a Quoxen account and an internet connection. Dialogue is still available as text without speech. If AI-written dialogue is unavailable, the game uses built-in lines.
Text is small or hard to read
Settings → Interface scales the interface text from 75% to 200%.
Write to us
Bugs, questions, or something the town did that you want to tell someone about. With a TestFlight build, the TestFlight app's own feedback also reaches us, screenshots included. For a bug, the details that help most:
- Your Mac model and macOS version.
- The app version or build number and the graphics preset.
- What you were doing, and whether it happens again.
